National examination council (NECO) was established in April 1999 by military administration of Abudulsalami Abubakar. By mandate, the examination body was to replace National Board for educational measurement which was established in 1992 by military government of Ibrahim Babangida.

LOCATIONS OF NECO OFFICES NATIONWIDE

NECO was charged with responsibility to provide alternative for the conduct of Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) which at that time was exclusively reserved for west African Examination Council (WAEC).

By the year 2000, NECO conducted its first SSCE examination. The establishment and creation of NECO was not without criticisms.

Some Nigerians welcomed its creation as providing candidates with alternative. Other Nigerians questioned its legality and ability to conduct examinations with both national and international acceptability.

Apart from conduct of SSCE examination, NECO also conducts national common entrance examination which is used for entrance into federal unity schools.

Today it is no doubt that the story of NECO in relation to its mandate and duties has been a successful one. NECO has been able to conduct examinations of international standard and acceptable worldwide.

SSCE results of NECO is acceptable in all Nigeria tertiary institutions and serve as alternate to WAEC.Also in employment process, NECO is accepted in Nigeria and beyond as an o’ level result.

NECO examination comes up not more than 3 weeks after the end of WAEC examination usually between June and July annually.

Its wide acceptability by both candidates, universities and employers of labour is a testament of its credibility and meeting up to international best practices.

As a holder of NECO certificate, circumstances such as result verification, obtaining result transcript among other things might warrant a need to visit to NECO office even after many years of taking the examination.

Conclusion

National Examination Council being a very young educational parastatal, some of its state offices are attached to states federal government Secretariat.
