Studies has shown that Lagos was originally occupied by Aworis, a Yoruba people. Hence Lagos is today known as Yorubaland.

However, presently, Lagos has diverse population of different ethnic and cultural background as a result of movement of people in search of greener pasture and opportunities.

Yoruba remain the major ethnic group found in Lagos, but Igbos, Hausa-Fulani and other minority tribes of Nigeria like Efik, Ijaws ans Ibibio are well found in Lagos.

Also, expartriates from some top countries of world like US, UK, Lebanese, China, Indian, Zimbabwe are found in their numbers in the city.

This is a result of heavy business activities and commercization of the city. All these contribute to the population growth and explosion of Lagos.

Lagos Population density is Pegged at about 6,871 residents per square kilometer for an estimate population of over 17 million. Greater part of Lagos is surround by oceans.

Most parts of Lagos are Islands. Nevertheless, there are mainland parts of the city like Ikeja which is the capital of Lagos.

Lagos is enjoying a stellar population growth. Experts are projecting that Lagos will be one of the top three (3) largest and most populous cities in the world by the year 2050.

It is no surprise that 25% of Nigeria’s GDP are generated in Lagos. At 3.44%growth rate, Lagos is estimated to have a population of about 24,418,768 by 2035.

It is however not so good for the city that about 70% population of Lagos lives in slums.

Millions of population living in Lagos live in and around lagoon without access to basic amenities such electricity, clean water, access roads etc.

This development moved world Bank to approve loan of $200 million for upgrade of nine (9) largest slums in Lagos city.
