As at current, there are five (5) government approved universities in Anambra state.
Of these universities in Anambra, two (2) are government owned while three (3) are private owned.

Federal University in Anambra
Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka
Nnamdi Azikiwe University located at Awka Anambra State capital is the federal university operating in Anambra state.
The university was established in 1991 and has Awka as its main campus.
Other campuses of Nnamdi Azikiwe University include, Nnewi, Agulu and Ifite-Ogwari.
In abbreviations, the university is also called NAU.
State University in Anambra
Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Uli
This is the only Anambra State government owned university.
The university which was established in 2000 is located at Uli town.
The university operated three (3) campuses located at Uli, Igbariam and Awka.
Private Universities in Anambra
There are three (3) private owned universities operating in Anambra State.
These Anambra private universities are all government approved and accredited.

Maddona University, Okija
Madonna University though has its main campus in Elele Rivers state, but also has its social science, arts and management science faculties in Okija, Anambra state.
The university is the first catholic owned university in Nigeria and is owned by a renowned catholic priest, Very Rev. Fr. Professor E.M.P Edeh.
The university was founded in 1999.
Tansian University Umunya
This a private christian university founded by late Rev Msgr Prof John Bosco Akam located at Umunya, Anambra State.
The private university was established in 2009 and is one of the NUC approved private universities in Anambra state.
Paul University, Awka
Paul University Awka, popularly called Unipaul is a christian owned university founded by Bishops of the five ecclesiastical provinces of the Anglican Church East of the Niger to provide undergraduate training in Arts, Natural and Applied Sciences, Social Sciences and Management.
The university was established in 2009 and has continued to grow tremendously.
Though a private university, the institution received government supports during the governorship tenure of Mr. Peter Obi.
