Recently, a motion was moved in Nigeria national assembly for establishment of a federal university in Ekiti State.

When this motion comes to fruition, the number of federal universities in Ekiti state will be total of two (2) making Ekiti state one of the states with highest number of federal universities in Nigeria.

Federal University in Ekiti State

Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, Ekiti State

Federal University, Oye-Ekiti popularly called FUOYE is currently the only federal university in Ekiti state.

The university was established in 2011 by the administration of then president Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.

The university operates two campuses at Oye-Ekiti and Ikole campuses.

The university has an estimated number of about 26,000 students both in its undergraduate and Postgraduate academic programmes.

State University in Ekiti State

Ekiti State University

This is the Ekiti state government owned university in Ekiti state.

The university is usually called EKSU and is situated at the state capital, Ado Ekiti.

The university though was established in 1981 as Awolowo University, but became Ekiti state university in 2011.

The university has changed its name four times since its establishment.

The state-owned university in Ekiti state has about 25,000 students both in its Postgraduate and undergraduate academic programmes.

Private University in Ekiti State

Afe Babalola University

Afe Babalola University is the only government approved and recognized private university in Ekiti state.

The university was founded by a Nigerian renowned lawyer, Afe Babalola in 1999.

The University is also known as ABUAD. The university is located at Ekiti state capital Ado Ekiti and is regarded as one of the best private universities in Nigeria.

The Ekiti state private university has about 9,000 students.
