North East is one of the six(6) geo political zones in Nigeria.

States in North East Nigeria

The north east Nigeria consist of six Nigerian states namely:

  • Adamawa State
  • Borno State
  • Bauchi State
  • Taraba State
  • Yobe State
  • Gombe State

Most of people in North East Nigeria are predominantly Muslims and of Hausa-Fulani tribe.

North East Nigeria make up less than one third of Nigerian’s total area.

It is part of Nigeria that has faced the huge security challenges in recent times.

Adamawa State

One of the states in North East Nigeria is Adamawa state.

The state transformed from Gongola state to Adamawa state in 1991.

The capital of the state is Yola which is the biggest city in state.

Adamawa state has a total of twenty-one (21) local government areas.

The major and biggest cities in Adamawa state are, Yola, Mubi, Michika, Numan and Ganye.

Bauchi State

Bauchi state which was formed in the year 1976 is one of the states in North East Nigeria.

The state is made up of twenty (20) local government areas.

The capital of the state is also called Bauchi.

Fulani is the biggest tribe in Bauchi state. The state has over fifty-five tribal groups.

Borno State

Another North East state in Nigeria is Borno state.

The state was created in 1976 and has Maiduguri as its capital.

Kanuri is the largest ethnic group in Borno state.

The state has 27 local government area. Borno state slogan is “Home of Peace”.

The state is the epic center of Nigerian’s terrorism war against deadly Boko Haram.

Gombe State

Gombe state is one of the north east states in Nigeria.

The capital of the state is also Gombe. It is the biggest city in the state.

Gombe state was created in 1996 by Gen. Sani Abacha, the then military head of states.

The Gombe state has a total of eleven (11) local government areas.

The state is also known as Jewel In The Savannah which is also the slogan of the state.

Taraba State

Taraba state is also one of the states in North East Geo-Political zone of Nigeria.

The capital of the state is Jalingo. It is also the biggest city in the state.

Taraba state which was created in the year 1991 has total of 16 local government areas.

Wukari is also among the major and biggest cities in Taraba state.

Yobe State

The agrarian Yobe state is one of the states in North East Nigeria.

The capital of the state is Damaturu. The state was created in the year 1991.

The largest city in Yobe state is Potiskum. The number of local government areas in Yobe state is 17.

The population of Yobe state is estimated to be around 4 million residents.

Population of North East Nigeria

The population of people living in north east Nigeria is estimated to be around 30 million residents.

Greater population of people living in north east Nigeria are farmers and traders.

North East is the most security challenged region in Nigeria.
